How Much Does SEO Cost? Monthly Prices Explained
Direct answer
SEO is usually sold as a monthly fee, and the fee follows the amount of work: how many pages and locations you have, how hard your market is, and how much writing and development is included. As one real reference, Taskcover's published plans start at $1,000 a month for local SEO, $2,500 for national SEO and $7,500 for several countries.
Key takeaways
- You pay for people's time, not for Google: appearing in the regular results is free, and Google does not sell rankings.
- The price follows the scope: pages, locations, countries, competition, and how much writing and development is included.
- Taskcover's published starting prices are $1,000 a month for local SEO, $2,500 for national and $7,500 for several countries, in US dollars.
- A quote far below the rest has usually removed the human work: research, writing, fixes and honest reporting.
- Ask every agency for a written scope, so you can compare quotes line by line.
In this guide
This guide is for owners asking how much SEO costs while comparing quotes or deciding whether to start. It quotes no industry averages, because we could not check the surveys behind them. It shows what drives the price, lists our own published prices as one real reference, and explains what a quote that is far too low leaves out. For a price for your own business, start with our SEO strategy service.
What are you paying for when you pay for SEO?
You are paying for people's time. None of the money goes to Google for a better position, because Google does not sell one.
Google says it never accepts money to include or rank a site in its search results, and that appearing in the unpaid results costs nothing.

So an SEO fee buys hours from people with different skills: someone to research and plan, someone to fix the website, someone to write and edit pages, and someone to earn mentions from other sites. When two quotes differ by a lot, the cheaper one usually contains fewer of those hours, or less experienced people.
How much does SEO cost per month?
For a real reference point, these are Taskcover's published starting prices. They are our prices, not an industry average. Other agencies charge less, and others charge more.
| Plan | Starts from | Built for |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO Starter | $1,000 a month | One location or service area. Three-month minimum. |
| Local Growth / Multi-location | $2,500 a month | Two or more priority locations. |
| National SEO Foundation | $2,500 a month | One country: a roadmap and monthly direction. |
| National SEO Growth System | $4,500 a month | One country: technical SEO, content, AI search and reporting run together. |
| Global SEO Expansion | $7,500 a month | Several countries or languages, planned market by market. |
| Enterprise / Multi-Market Authority | Custom, from $12,000 a month | Large sites, migrations and programmes with many stakeholders. |
Every figure is a starting price. The final number depends on your market, your site and how fast you want to move, and the pricing page shows what each plan includes and leaves out. We recommend the smallest scope that can realistically support the goal.
What drives the price of SEO up or down?
Six things move the price, and all of them come down to how much work there is.
| What changes | Why it changes the price | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Number of pages | Every page that should bring customers has to be checked, and many rewritten. A larger site also takes longer to audit and keep healthy. | A dental clinic with 15 pages against an online furniture store with 4,000 product pages. |
| Number of locations | Each location needs its own page, its own Google Business Profile and its own reviews to look after. | On our local plan, each extra location adds from $300 to $500 a month. |
| Countries and languages | Each market has different competitors and different words for the same thing, and pages may need translating. | The USA, Canada and Australia each get their own plan. |
| How competitive the market is | Where established companies already publish a lot and are widely mentioned, it takes more pages and more reputation work to be shown beside them. | A roofing company in a small town against a software company selling nationwide. |
| How much writing and development is included | Advice costs less than work. A plan that tells you what to do is cheaper than one where the agency writes the pages and makes the fixes. | In our plans, full content writing and development work are priced separately. |
| The state of the site today | A site with years of unfixed errors, or one about to be rebuilt, needs more work in the first months. | A redesign that changes every web address needs a redirect plan before launch. |
One-time or monthly SEO: which do you need?
One-time work answers a question or fixes a defined problem. Monthly work keeps improving the site and its reputation. Many businesses start with the first and move to the second.
| Type of work | What you get | Our starting price | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free SEO audit | A short review of your site and market, the main problems and a recommended scope | $0 | You do not know where to start |
| Search Growth Audit | A fuller review of demand, content and technical health, with a prioritized roadmap | From $1,500, one-time | You want a plan your own team can carry out |
| Technical SEO Audit | A map of technical problems, with fixes a developer can act on | From $2,500, one-time | A complex site, or one about to be moved or rebuilt |
| Monthly SEO | Ongoing research, fixes, pages, reputation work and reporting | From $1,000 a month | You want search to keep bringing customers |
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO usually costs less than national SEO because there is less to do: one area, one business profile and a handful of pages. Our Local SEO Starter plan starts at $1,000 a month for one location or service area, with a three-month minimum.
That plan covers a review of your Google Business Profile, a map of the local searches worth winning, your main location page, a check of your directory listings, advice on earning reviews, a look at local competitors and simple monthly reporting. Writing new content, technical fixes, adverts and press outreach are extra. Two or more locations move to a multi-location plan from $2,500 a month. See local SEO for how the work is done.
What is the average cost of SEO for a small business?
There is no average we can stand behind. The figures quoted online come from surveys in which agencies and freelancers report their own fees, and they blend a one-person local job with a national programme. We could not verify any of them, so none is repeated here. A more useful number is your own: ask two or three agencies to price the same goal in writing.
What does an SEO price that is far too low leave out?
A very low monthly fee pays for very little of a person's time, so the human work goes first. These are the parts that usually disappear.
What usually goes missing from a very cheap SEO plan
- Research into your marketYou get the same list of search terms as every other client, with no check on which ones bring buyers.
- Original writingPages are produced in bulk with little or no editing. Google's spam policies name mass-produced pages that add no value as scaled content abuse.
- Real fixesYou receive an automated report listing hundreds of warnings. Nobody sorts them by importance or fixes anything.
- Earned mentionsLinks are bought, or placed in bulk on directories. Google lists buying links for ranking purposes as link spam.
- Reporting you can useThe report shows positions for search terms nobody types. It does not show calls, enquiries or sales.
- A person to talk toThere is no named person who knows your business and can explain what was done last month.
The shortcuts are not harmless. Google says sites that break its spam policies may rank lower or not appear in results at all, and its advice on hiring tells owners to avoid anyone who talks about link schemes.
How do you compare two SEO quotes?
Compare what each quote puts in writing, not the monthly number.
Five checks before you compare prices
- Ask what is done each month, and by whom
A scope should name the work: pages reviewed, pages written, fixes made, reports sent. “Ongoing optimization” is not a scope.
- Ask what costs extra
Writing, development, translation, advertising spend and software are the usual extras. Two quotes are comparable only when you know which of these each includes.
- Ask about the term
Find out the minimum period, the notice you must give, and whether the content and the accounts are yours when you leave.
- Ask how results will be measured
Look for calls, enquiries and sales traced back to search. Positions for search terms are one signal, not the result.
- Set the fee against what a customer is worth
An example with made-up numbers: if a dental clinic earns $800 from a new patient in the first year, a $1,000 monthly fee is covered by two extra patients a month. The question is whether the plan can plausibly bring that. Our guide to estimating what search could bring in shows how to work it out.
Next, how to choose an SEO agency has the questions for the call, and how long SEO takes covers what to expect afterwards.
Related serviceA plan priced for your business
Our SEO strategy service starts with how your business earns money and ends with an ordered plan and a fixed monthly price, from $2,500 a month.
See the serviceWhy is SEO a monthly fee and not a one-off payment?
Because the work does not finish. Competitors publish new pages, search results change and your business adds services and locations. A one-off audit or website build makes sense when you have people to carry on afterwards.
Is advertising spend included in an SEO price?
No. Adverts are paid to Google separately, and managing them is a separate service. Our PPC management starts at $1,500 a month or 10 to 12% of ad spend, whichever is higher. Google says advertising with it has no effect on where your site appears in the regular results.
Can I pay for SEO only when it gets results?
Some agencies offer this, and it deserves caution. Nobody controls Google's results, so a fee tied to rankings pushes an agency towards easy search terms that bring no customers, or towards shortcuts that break Google's rules. Google's own advice is that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
How do I get an exact price for my business?
Ask for a review of your site first. Our free SEO audit looks at your site, your competitors and what your customers search for, then recommends a scope and a price. You can take that scope to other agencies to compare.
