What Does an SEO Mentor Do, and Who Needs One?
The short answer
An SEO mentor is an experienced search specialist who guides the people doing your SEO instead of doing the work for them. The mentor sets the order of work, reviews plans and pages before they go live, answers questions as they come up, and trains your team so the skill stays inside your business.
Key takeaways
- An SEO mentor advises, reviews and teaches. Your own people still write the pages and make the changes.
- Mentoring suits a business that has someone to do the work and nobody senior to direct or check it.
- A consultant usually hands over a plan for one project. A mentor stays with the team while they act on it.
- Taskcover's mentoring plans start from $1,000 a month, and hands-on work is scoped separately.
In this guide
This guide is for founders, marketing leads and small in-house teams who can do search engine optimization (SEO) work themselves but are not sure it is the right work. It explains what an SEO mentor does from week to week, how that differs from a consultant or an agency, what it costs and when it pays off. If you already know you want one, see how Taskcover's SEO mentoring works.
What does an SEO mentor do, week to week?
A mentor does five things: sets the order of work, reviews it before it goes live, answers questions, trains people and holds a monthly review. Your team does everything else.
| What the mentor does | What it looks like | What stays with you |
|---|---|---|
| Sets the order of work | One list of what to do first, second and later, based on what brings customers | Doing the tasks |
| Reviews before you publish | Reads the plan for a redesign or a batch of new pages and says what to change | Writing and building |
| Answers questions between sessions | A written answer, so work does not wait for the next call | Asking early |
| Trains the team | Workshops for writers, marketers and developers, including what developers should fix first | Practicing on your own pages |
| Holds a monthly review | What was done, what changed and what comes next | Acting on the list |
SEO mentor vs SEO consultant: what is the difference?
The titles overlap, and no professional body controls either one. The difference that matters is what you are left with. A consultant usually hands over findings and recommendations for one project. A mentor stays with your team as they act on them, month after month. An agency does the work itself.
Ask any provider what you will receive each month and who carries out the changes. The answer tells you more than the job title. To choose between hiring, outsourcing and mentoring, read in-house SEO vs agency vs mentor.
SEO coaching
Another name for SEO mentoring. Some providers use coaching for short sessions on one skill and mentoring for a longer relationship, but there is no agreed line between them. Compare what is included, not the label.
Who needs an SEO mentor, and who does not?
You need a mentor when you have someone to do the work and nobody senior to direct or check it. You do not need one when there is nobody to do the work at all.
Does a mentor fit your situation?
- You do the SEO yourself and cannot tell which tasks matterA mentor fits
- Writers and developers publish work that nobody experienced checksA mentor fits
- You must explain the SEO plan and budget to the people above youA mentor fits
- Nobody in the business has time to do SEO workYou need an agency or a hire
- You have not tried the basics yetStart on your own first
If the last line describes you, follow a plan for doing SEO yourself first.
Is SEO mentoring worth it?
It is worth it when the fee is smaller than the cost of your team working on the wrong things, and wasted when nobody acts on the advice. Here is a test. Add up the hours your team spent on SEO last quarter, then mark the tasks that led to an enquiry or a sale. If most of the hours went elsewhere, the problem is direction, and direction is what a mentor sells.
A mentor cannot promise a position on Google, and neither can anyone else. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. The same page lists SEO training among the useful services that SEOs provide.

How much does an SEO mentor cost?
Fees depend on the provider, the number of sessions and how many people are covered. We have found no published industry figure we would stand behind, so here are our own prices.
| Plan | What it includes | Price |
|---|---|---|
| SEO Mentor Office Hours | One session a month, with questions answered in between. | From $1,000 a month |
| SEO Mentor Growth Advisory | Two sessions a month, with your roadmap and content plans reviewed. | From $1,500 a month |
| SEO Mentor Team Enablement | Workshops, training and quality checks for a whole team. | From $2,500 a month |
Office Hours has a three-month minimum. Mentoring is advice: hands-on work, writing and development are not included unless scoped separately. Every plan is listed on the pricing page.

Common questions about SEO mentors
How often do you meet an SEO mentor?
Usually once a month. Taskcover's plans include one to three sessions a month, depending on the plan, and questions sent between sessions are answered in writing.
How long should SEO mentoring last?
Plan for at least three months. Google says some changes to a site show in search results within a few hours and others take several months. Taskcover's SEO Mentor Office Hours plan has a three-month minimum.
Is an SEO mentor the same as an SEO course?
No. A course teaches general principles to everyone who enrolls. A mentor looks at your website and your team, and tells you what to do first. To teach several people at once, see how to train your team in SEO.
Can an SEO mentor help with AI search, such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews?
Yes. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and that SEO best practices remain relevant, so much of the work is the same. Taskcover's mentoring also covers how assistants like ChatGPT choose who to mention.
