AI search & GEO

GEO vs SEO vs AEO: What Is the Difference?

The short answer

SEO is the work of getting your pages found in search results. AEO is the part of that work that makes a page answer a question clearly enough to be quoted. GEO is the same work aimed at AI tools that write answers, such as ChatGPT. All three share one foundation, and Google calls all of it SEO.

Key takeaways

  • SEO, AEO and GEO are three names for overlapping work, not three separate jobs.
  • Google says optimizing for its AI answers is still SEO, and Microsoft says SEO practices also make content eligible for AI answers.
  • The real differences are where the result shows, which crawlers need access and how you measure it.
  • GEO is not replacing SEO, because AI answers are built from pages that search engines have already found and ranked.
  • Be careful with any package that guarantees AI mentions: Microsoft and OpenAI both say there is no guarantee.

What do Google and Microsoft say about GEO vs SEO?

Both say the foundation is the same. Google's guide to its AI features says SEO best practices still apply because AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on its core Search ranking and quality systems. It adds that optimizing for AI search is still SEO, and suggests reading its advice on judging third-party SEO offers before buying an AEO or GEO service.

Microsoft's Bing Webmaster Guidelines say Bing and Copilot rely on the same crawling, indexing and ranking foundation as ordinary search, and that the practices which help a page get indexed also make it eligible for AI answers. Microsoft does give GEO its own definition: work on whether content is eligible to be used and referenced in AI responses.

OpenAI and Perplexity do not use either term in the documentation we checked. They publish rules for their crawlers and little about how answers are chosen.

Google and Microsoft both document that their AI answers run on the same crawling, indexing and ranking systems as ordinary search results.

Where are GEO and SEO really different?

In four practical ways.

Four differences that matter in practice

  • Different crawlersChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot and Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. A site can rank well on Google and still be closed to them by a robots.txt rule or a firewall. Should you block AI crawlers? covers the choices.
  • More than one search per questionGoogle says its AI features may run several related searches at once for a single question (it calls this query fan-out). A page that answers a follow-up question may be drawn on even when it does not match the exact words typed.
  • A different scoreboardSEO has positions. AI answers have citations and mentions, and in ChatGPT they can differ by person and place. Google's generative AI report counts impressions, and Bing's AI report counts citations.
  • Your name can appear without your websiteAn AI answer about the best roofer in a city can draw on directories, reviews and news as well as the roofer's own site. That makes consistent facts and honest mentions elsewhere matter more. No vendor has said how much weight they carry.

GEO vs AEO: is there a difference?

Very little. AEO grew up around short answers on Google's results page. GEO was named for AI tools that write longer answers from several sources. On a page, both ask for the same thing: a clear question, a direct answer and facts that can be checked. Agencies often use the two words for the same service.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answers are assembled from pages that a search engine has already crawled, indexed and judged. Google says this of its own AI features, and Microsoft says it of Copilot. A site with weak SEO gives an AI tool little to retrieve.

What has changed is the click. An AI answer can satisfy a searcher without a visit, and Google has not published how often that happens. Microsoft notes that a fall in clicks does not always mean you have become less visible. The practical response is to keep the SEO foundation, make pages easy to cite, and measure enquiries as well as traffic. Is SEO still worth it? looks at that question in full.

Which one should your business pay for?

Pay for the problem you have, not for the label.

Match the work to the problem

  • Your site does not appear on Google for your own services.Start with SEO basics: crawling, indexing and the pages that describe what you sell. AI tools cannot cite what search engines cannot find.
  • You rank on Google, but AI answers name your competitors. This is where AI search work earns its fee: crawler access, clearer facts, pages rebuilt around buyer questions and mentions on trusted sites.
  • AI tools say something wrong about your business.Fix the source of the error first, on your own site and on the listings the answer draws from.
  • An agency offers a GEO package with guaranteed mentions.Walk away. Microsoft says GEO does not guarantee citations, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.

For the third case, see what to do when AI says something wrong about your business. On cost: at Taskcover a one-time AI Search Visibility Review starts from $1,500, and AI search optimization is included in the National SEO Growth System from $4,500 a month. Questions owners ask about GEO, SEO and AEO

Do I need a separate GEO agency?

Usually not. The work shares its foundation with SEO, so splitting it between two firms tends to duplicate audits and produce conflicting advice. Ask whoever does your SEO how they handle AI crawler access, AI reporting and consistent facts. If they cannot answer, that is the gap to fill.

Does ranking first on Google mean AI will cite me?

Not necessarily. Google says its AI features use its Search ranking systems, but it has not said that the top result is the one cited. ChatGPT and Perplexity use their own crawlers, and OpenAI says ChatGPT also works with other search providers, so a Google ranking does not carry over automatically.

Does GEO need different content from SEO?

No. Google says you do not need to write in a special way for its AI features, and warns against making a page for every variation of a question. Content that is original, specific and easy to follow serves both.

Can I do SEO and ignore AI search?

You can, and much of the benefit will follow anyway because the foundation is shared. What you would miss is access for AI search crawlers, the free AI reports in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and knowing what AI tools say about you. Those take little time to check.

Not sure which problem you have?
