What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
The short answer
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a business easy for AI tools that write answers, such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, to find, understand and cite. It rests on the same foundations as SEO: pages a crawler can read, clear facts, original content and a good name on other sites.
Key takeaways
- GEO means making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and cite when they write an answer.
- Google says optimizing for its AI answers is still SEO, and Microsoft says GEO does not guarantee a citation.
- The term comes from a 2023 research paper, not from a search company.
- Google says its AI features need no llms.txt file, no special markup and no special writing style.
In this guide
If you run a business and keep hearing "GEO", this guide explains what generative engine optimization is, where the term came from, what the work involves and what it cannot promise. It is the idea behind our AI search optimization service. For a side-by-side with SEO and AEO, read GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
What is generative engine optimization, in plain words?
It is the work of getting your business into the answers that AI tools write, by making your pages easy to retrieve and worth citing. "Generative engine" is the research name for those tools.
Generative engine
A search tool that writes an answer in its own words instead of only listing links. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity all work this way.
Most of these tools look pages up first, then write. Google describes this for its own AI features: its normal Search ranking systems pull relevant pages from the Search index, and the AI writes from what it finds there. Google calls this grounding. Microsoft says Bing and Copilot share the crawling, indexing and ranking foundation of ordinary Bing search.
So GEO has two halves. First, be retrievable: a page the tool cannot crawl or index cannot be used. Second, be worth citing: say something specific, state it plainly, and be a business that other sites vouch for.
Google's guide to its generative AI features says they are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, and that optimizing for them is still SEO.

Where did the term GEO come from?
From researchers, not from a search company. A paper called "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", first posted in November 2023 and later accepted at the KDD 2024 conference, named both "generative engines" and the practice of optimizing for them. Its summary reports visibility gains of up to 40% in the authors' own experiments. That is a research result, not a promise from Google or OpenAI.
The search companies treat the term differently. Microsoft's Bing Webmaster Guidelines define GEO as work on whether content is eligible to be used and referenced in AI responses. Google mentions GEO and AEO only as names people give to work aimed at AI search, and says that work is still SEO.
One source of confusion: in marketing, lower-case "geo" usually means location, as in geo-targeting (showing an ad only to people in one area). GEO in capitals, in a conversation about search, means generative engine optimization.
What does GEO involve? Four examples
The same jobs as good SEO, with extra attention to facts and reputation. The examples are illustrations, not client results.
| The work | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Let the right crawlers in | A roofing company checks that its robots.txt file and firewall do not block Googlebot, Bingbot or OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot). | Google, Microsoft and OpenAI each say a page must be crawlable before it can be used in an answer. |
| State the facts in plain text | A dental clinic lists its treatments, opening hours and the suburbs it serves in text on the page, not only inside images. | Microsoft says pages are more likely to be chosen when facts are explicit and visible on the page. Google says to keep important content in text. |
| Publish what only you know | An online furniture store publishes its own guide to measuring a stairwell before ordering a sofa, with its own photos. | Google says original content that is not common knowledge will likely affect your presence in AI search more than any other suggestion in its guide. |
| Earn real mentions | A software company gets reviewed by a trade publication its buyers read. | No vendor says how much mentions count. Google does say that chasing inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it seems. |
Then check the result: how to track whether AI recommends your business explains how. For one tool at a time, read how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business.
What can you skip?
Most of the shortcuts sold under the GEO label. Google's own guide lists several things its AI features do not need:
- An llms.txt file or any other special file for AI. Google says its Search does not use them.
- Special schema markup for AI, or text chopped into small "chunks".
- A page for every possible wording of a question. Google treats pages made mainly to manipulate AI answers as spam.
Microsoft adds one more: content written to manipulate an AI model can get a site demoted or removed from Bing. How to show up in Google AI Overviews goes through each myth.
Can GEO guarantee that AI will recommend you?
No. Microsoft writes that GEO does not guarantee that content is used or cited in AI answers. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed. Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed. What the work does is remove the reasons you would be left out, and give the tools something accurate to say about you.

See the serviceQuestions owners ask about GEO
Is GEO the same as AEO?
Nearly. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the older name and leans toward writing clear answers to questions. GEO is the newer name and leans toward AI tools that write their own answers. The work overlaps almost completely. See what answer engine optimization is.
What is GEO in SEO?
In SEO, GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the part of search work aimed at AI-written answers. Google says this work is still SEO. A plan that already covers crawling, content and reputation covers most of it.
How much does GEO cost?
At Taskcover, a one-time AI Search Visibility Review starts from $1,500, and ongoing work is included in the National SEO Growth System from $4,500 a month. The exact price depends on your site and market; current figures are on our pricing page.
How long does GEO take to work?
No vendor publishes a timeline. Access changes are quick: OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Publishing content worth citing and earning mentions takes months, as it does in SEO.
