What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
The short answer
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of writing and structuring your pages so that tools which answer questions directly, such as Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews or ChatGPT, can lift a clear, correct answer from them and name you as the source. It is a part of SEO, not a replacement for it.
Key takeaways
- AEO means writing pages so that a search tool can lift a clear answer from them and credit you, and it is part of SEO.
- The practical rule is simple: put the question in a heading and the answer in the first two sentences under it.
- Google decides which page becomes a featured snippet, and there is no tag that makes it choose yours.
- An answer shown on the results page may not bring a click, so count mentions and enquiries as well as visits.
In this guide
This guide is for owners who have been told they "need AEO" and want to know what answer engine optimization is, what it looks like on a real page and what it cannot do. It supports our AI search optimization service. The term overlaps with GEO; GEO vs SEO vs AEO sets the three side by side.
What is answer engine optimization, in plain words?
It is making your pages the easiest place to find a short, correct answer to a question your customers ask.
Answer engine
A search tool that replies with the answer itself instead of only a list of links. Examples are the boxed answer at the top of some Google results (a featured snippet), Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
AEO has no official definition. It is a trade term that predates AI chat tools. Google's current guide mentions AEO and GEO together as names people give to work aimed at AI search, and says that work is still SEO. So "AEO in SEO" simply means the part of SEO that deals with questions and answers.
Where do answer engines show answers?
In the places below. In each one, the search company's systems decide what is shown.
| Where | What the searcher sees | What the company says |
|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet (Google) | A boxed extract from one page, above the normal results or inside the "People also ask" list. | Google's systems decide whether a page makes a good snippet. You cannot mark a page as one. |
| AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google) | An AI-written answer with links to pages. | A page must be indexed and able to show a snippet. No special markup is needed. |
| ChatGPT search | A written answer with citations you can open. | OpenAI says results are ranked on several factors it does not list, and placement is not guaranteed. |
| Copilot and Bing | A written answer with cited sources. | Microsoft says clear, focused pages that put key information early are more likely to be used. |
What does AEO look like on a page? An example
The answer comes first, in words that make sense on their own. Here is a made-up example for a dental clinic.
| Part of the page | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Our Commitment to Patient Care | Do you take emergency dental appointments? |
| First lines | For over twenty years our friendly team has been proud to serve the community with a wide range of services. | Yes. We keep emergency appointments open every weekday and can usually see you the same day. Call before 10 am. |
| What a search tool can lift | Nothing that answers the question. | A complete answer, with the clinic as the source. |
What makes an answer easy to quote
- A question as the headingUse the words customers use, not your internal names for services.
- The answer in the first two sentencesMicrosoft's guidelines say to put essential information near the top and avoid long introductions.
- An answer that stands aloneName the thing you are talking about. "It costs more" means nothing once it is lifted out of the page. Microsoft says content is more likely to be cited when its facts are explicit.
- One topic per pageMicrosoft says pages focused on one main topic are more likely to be selected.
How do you find the questions to answer?
Start with what customers already ask you, then check what they type into Google.
- Emails, calls and chat logs: the questions your staff answer every week.
- The "People also ask" box on Google for your main services.
- The queries list in Google Search Console, filtered to searches that contain who, what, how, why, can or cost.
Answer each real question once, on the page where it belongs. A pricing question belongs on the pricing or service page, not on a separate thin page.
What can AEO not do?
It cannot force a search tool to use your answer, and it cannot guarantee a click.
- There is no tag that makes a page a featured snippet. Google says so directly.
- There is no special writing style for AI. Google says you do not need to write in a specific way, or break content into tiny pieces, for its AI features. Answer-first writing is for your readers.
- More pages is not better. Google says a separate page for every variation of a question, made mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers, breaks its spam policy.
An answer shown on the results page may satisfy the searcher without a visit. Microsoft says a fall in clicks does not always mean a loss of visibility. That is why we count mentions and enquiries, not only visits. See how to track whether AI recommends your business.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They describe almost the same work. AEO is the older term and focuses on writing clear answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, is newer and focuses on AI tools that write their own answers. What generative engine optimization is covers that side.
Do I need FAQ schema for AEO?
No. Google says structured data is not required for its AI features and there is no special markup to add. Schema can still make a page eligible for other rich results, and it must match the text people can see. Our guide on how to add schema markup explains how.
How long should an answer be?
There is no official length. Google says there is no ideal page length for its AI features. In practice, one to three sentences that make sense alone, followed by the detail, serves both a reader and a search tool.
Is AEO worth it for a small local business?
Yes, for the handful of questions people ask before they call: what you charge, where you work, when you are open and whether you handle their problem. Answer those plainly on your site and keep your Google Business Profile current, which Google says can help a business appear in AI responses.
